At www.szienz.com we develop applications for life science and biotech companies.
Our software product is undergoing major architectural changes under the hood but we also want to improve the user interface.
The solution is working enterprise wide (business, HM, research, production, QC) and the standard product contains about 150 databases, while customization usually adds another dozen, so navigation is an issue. Not one user uses all but they pick what is needed in their work.
We have given a great deal of thought in how users may navigate this daunting solution;
• as a first time user, without getting lost
• as an average user, without getting confused
• as a pro user, getting wherever he/she wants quickly,
and try to achieve this with as few mouse clicks and as few icons as possible.
Usually, a tree view is hidden for the user and we consider this a last resort for navigation and should not be required at any time if we design our solution intuitively enough.
The icons must not be visually intrusive (main colors grey and white, only getting color with mouse over, see AppStore on iPhone as an example), 20 x 20 pixels and try to be as minimalistic as possible, but still universally understandable. The whole set should be recognized as one family of icons.
Samples are attached of our current set we use for form view, list view, and list selection view, giving you an impression what we mean with a minimalistic design. These examle may be altered to make them fit into the family, they are just examples.

Leave out any pixel that is not absolutely necessary to identify the icon's meaning.
For example, an edit icon can be just a pencil, no need to put a page behind it.
The colored versions may really stand out in bright colors as they are only visible with mouse over or when a particular state is active (e.g. pressing the edit button will make all fields editable), but then it must be immediately clear to the users they are pressing the correct button. |
