Tips for local businesses to be found

Do you remember the time that business marketers chose their business names based on the ranking in the telephone book? You’d best call your business AAA to appear on the top of the telephone list to be found as first. Well you now don’t have to add A, AAA or ABC to your business name to show up as first
– welcome to the age of internet.

Increasingly, when folks turn to a search engine, they aren’t looking for something around the world, they’re looking for something in their neighborhood. They even will be jumping in the car, going out and buying what they find online.

So here are some tips what you can do to improve your local business to be found by search engines.

Relate to your geographic surroundings

Search engines will try to come up with the best local search results. So make sure your website is related with lots of local content. Local markers like addresses, city names, suburb names, neighborhood names, zip codes, area codes, maps and directions are all markers that say your business is local. Insert these date into your pages and let websites associated with these local markers refer to your website.

Be interesting for your local readers
Provide content that is of interest for your local readers, to create content that is related to your community. Even if it is not directly related to your product or services.
For example you could cover the musical performances, festival or B2B network events of your community.
Using a little RSS magic and a bookmarking tool like Delicious, you could even automate the aggregation of news and other related content for neighborhoods with very little work.
This way you’ll  improve local search results by creating content that offers value to local readers. For local search this is the kind of information search engines value the most.

Managing customer expectations

Images are the great thing for online shopping. Good and clear pictures
will persuade customers to buy products online. They will help a customer to make them buy. Nowadays pictures of products on internet can be very comprehensive you can zoom in on details almost feel the fabric and sometimes you can view a product from different angles and with different patterns or colors.

After the purchasing the waiting time begins. How can you manage the expectations of you customer while waiting. Sometimes the customer gets dissatisfied when receiving the product and will return the product.

How many times does this happen with your products?

There are several reasons why dissatisfaction will occur. One of the reasons could be that the expectations of your customer changes while waiting, just because he has forgotten how your products looked and has made his own imaginable picture of your product in his mind.

Imagine your customer is very excited by purchasing your product and can't wait to receive it. Your customer might need a reminder of the purchase and will pin a photo of the product on their bulletin board. You as retailer have no control of what this picture will look like. It could be a black and white picture or a low-quality color picture with vague colors.

What will happen in the mind of the waiting customer?
From research it turned out that both these type of pictures the high quality on the web shop and the “whatever” quality one on the bulletin board seem to affect expectations during shipping time and can result in dissatisfied customers. It appears that the low-quality images alter a person's memory of what they bought and shift their expectations while they wait for the purchase to show up. The high-quality, sometimes interactive images that excited the person enough to purchase are replaced by the different images in the printout or by corrected by imaginary picture of the product. The customer is aware of the poor quality of the picture so his mind will switch between these two pictures and probably will end up with his own creation of an image of the product. So when the product arrives, there's some disconnect between what they've been imagining and what they're looking at.

Why blogging is still hot

It is true social media is much sexier,
but don’t be mistaken, blogging is still hot.

A couple of years ago small businesses and large businesses were told to have a blog or … die. But with the rise of social media the importance of having a blog seems to fade. Although having some similar functions social media and blogging can not be considered interchangeable. It is better to see them as complementing tools with their own purposes and embed them both in your overall marketing plan.

Blogs on top of social media sites
Blogs are great to use on top of social media sites for damage control, corporate communications and messages from executives, because you can control the look and feel and you won't miss people who are not followers or “friends,”. Post about your blogs on your social media sites.

In-depth customer interaction
Blogs allow for an in-depth customer interaction. They are also ideal for collecting customer feedback, which is a great way to remove some of the burden of your customer service personnel. It keeps down the marketing and corporate speak while really getting at the needs of your customers and prospects.

How crowdsourcing can change your fashion business.

Several fashion businesses have already found their way to the opportunities of crowdsourcing in the way they do business.

How about the idea when you as a customer can have a say in which designs you favorite and which one will be taken into production. Moreover, you will even get a discount on your purchase by just expressing what you like. Emerging social web culture and tools make all this possible.

Dirga, you won 5 projects in the last three months. How did you do that…..

But first, could you please tell something about yourself?

My name is Dirga Primadian and I live in Indonesia. I am a talented creative. I like to play, guitar, to draw and I like everything that is Art.

From March this year, I am also an online-freelancer and I started it at PimTim!
I am so excited when I am brainstorming and sketching and creating the logos. I believe that working as a online-freelancer I can increase my experience and enlarge my capacity and learn more things around the world of Design.

PimTim introduces Pim van der Vossen

An interview this time with the Creative Pim van der Vossen , The Netherlands. http://www.pimtim.com/members/677/folio

Pim, you are one of our Young Design Talents and you won 5 projects in the last three months. How did you do that?

Pim, you have a wonderful name, could you please tell something about yourself?

My name is Pim van der Vossen and I come from a small village near the coast called Noordwijkerhout, and at the age of 18 years I am one of the youngest designers on the site.
In my daily life I am busy studying for my final VWO exams in order to go to University.  I would definitely like to continue my studies further at University but I am still undecided whether to study Architecture or Industrial design as both subjects interest me very much. More of me at www.pi-vo.nl

How did you became a designer?

Designing was just a hobby that got out of hand. I began on a community-forum of which I was a member, where I could turn my fantasies into signatures and avatars and at the same time learn and explore the possibilities with Photoshop. People got to know me through this and started sending me requests, before I knew it I was the resident designer of the web site, which had 10.000 members.

Not only on the internet but also at school my creativity was noticed and to this day my classmates are jealous of the layout of my projects which often take up more time than the actual content. Quickly people started to ask me to design posters for school and through this I got my first paid job designing posters for a discotheque . After a few years of tasks via the internet and school I discovered by chance PimTim.com where since last August I can be found daily.

You won 5 contests in the last couple of months, what is your secret?
I don’t really have any secrets, and if I did of course would keep them to myself. As with most of the designers on the site I listen to the wishes of the client and try as much as possible to immerse myself in their company. By keeping the requests of the customers in mind you can decide which ideas and wishes he or she requires , then  using my own vision I hope to produce the right results.

PimTim introduces Lex Lawton

An interview this time with the Creative Lex lawton, United Kingdom: http://www.pimtim.com/members/482/folio
Rudi, you won 6 projects in the last three months. How did you do that?

But first could you please tell something about yourself?

I'm 22 and grew up surrounded by a family of artists and designers. My sister Emma set up a design agency in London last year and I've been doing freelance work for her since then.
www.withthebrand.co.uk

I graduate from University College Falmouth (Cornwall) in the Summer and PimTim is a great opportunity for me to be a part of the industry and offer clients a fresh and original perspective. As a design student, the feedback I’ve had on PimTim has given me a lot of confidence, so this is a big thank you to all the buyers.

How did you became a designer?

My parents always told me to do what I enjoy and coming from such an 'arty' family it was almost inevitable for me to end up in art or design. I can appreciate fine art but the reason I wanted to become a designer was to give my work more of a purpose. There are few things better than watching one of your ideas develop, grow, and then to see it in context on the internet or in the 'real world'.

You won 6 contests in the last couple of months, what is your secret?

Usually it is just about making a connection with the client and actually understanding the 'feel' they want for their brand. The best way to do this is to read the brief carefully and then sketch the ideas that come to mind, however obscure! Ideas have to work and be clear, however badly you draw them, before you make the move onto the computer.

PimTim introduces in_5_ide

An interview this time with the Creative Rudi Setiawan, Indonesia: http://www.pimtim.com/members/30/folio
Rudi, you won 7 projects in the last three months. How did you do that…..

But first could you please tell something about yourself?

I am 31 years old, married to Filza and have a very beautiful daughter named Khaira. I have been working in graphic design since 2003. I studied my degree at Universitas Komputer Indonesia, Bandung. After graduating I worked for some small agencies in advertising and I am now working for a movies-magazine in Indonesia (Cinemags) as senior designer.
I found out that internet offers a fantastic way in dealing with clients from all over the world who need design work. I like the challenges and the opportunities to meet other designers from other countries.

How did you became a designer?

I like to draw and read comic books. These two hobbies inspired me to became a designer.

You won 7 contests in the last couple of months, what is your secret?

My secret is to read the brief carefully and do a thorough analysis to understand the company, its doings and the connection with the name/identity they aspire. Last but not least to, I create designs with my own style ;)

The Annual Design Awards (ANNDAS) is open to everyone around the world, from large corporate professionals to work-from-home freelancers, and the entry fee is kept very low so that we don't restrict creativity.
